The federal government’s conditional cash transfer policy for 15 million households will begin on October 17, 2023, according to Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Betta Edu.
She made the comments yesterday during her appearance on Channels Television, months after the government stopped providing petroleum subsidies.
With the president’s approval, which the minister hopes to receive this week, the conditional cash transfer to 15 million households in Nigeria will be officially launched on October 17th.
She claims that the ministry is collaborating with interested parties across the country to compile an accurate list of beneficiaries.
We are currently participating in a verification exercise. There are people in every state working with the state cash transfer office, governors serving as the heads of the steering committee, and a number of other people who can attest to the fact that “boots have been put on the ground.”
The minister went on to say that all of this was done so that they could be sure the people on the national social register were genuine Nigerians living on less than $1.95 per day and were deserving of the assistance.
Mrs. Betta has stated that the purpose of the verification exercise is to clean up the register because some people on it may have died or moved up the economic ladder.
Two things, then. To begin, “as we speak, we are on the field cleaning up that data and doing a complete verification and we are juxtaposing both the BVN, NIM, and the rest of it to identify these people and be sure we are dealing with authentic persons,” the 36-year-old said.
“And then, of course, there’s biometrics to it, and you have a capture of the head of household, as well as a picture of the household so it can be located. Each of these homes has a number attached to it so that residents can check their information against the official list.
