The governorship election petition tribunal, based in Enugu, is set to rule on petitions today challenging the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Peter Mbah, for the 2023 governorship election in the state, creating a tense atmosphere in the city of Enugu.

The three-person tribunal presided over by Justice Kudirat Morayo Akano reserved judgement at the conclusion of the hearing, and yesterday it was announced that the judgement would begin today at 9 a.m.

According to Daily Sun, the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition Labour Party (LP) have both expressed panic and apprehension since the judgement date was announced.

The case between Chijioke Edeoga of the LP and Governor Mbah of the PDP has been called the most intriguing post-election legal dispute in the state’s history by political observers and analysts.

Edeoga and LP had gone to the tribunal to challenge the legitimacy of Mbah’s NYSC discharge certificate after he was declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In addition to questioning the legitimacy of the votes tallied during the election, they also claimed that Mbah had not completed his mandatory youth service obligations before assuming a political post in 2003.

Petitioners claimed that their votes were unfairly diluted due to computation errors in the Owo and Ugbawka wards of the Nkanu East, Enugu East, and Udenu local governments.

Both sides presented witnesses and evidence that was accepted by the tribunal, and there were robust legal arguments and citations throughout the hearing.

The faithful of both camps have resorted to prayer and fasting in the hopes of gaining divine intervention.

According to those familiar with the situation, the various security agencies, led by the Police, have made sufficient security arrangements to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
