RUSSIA WEGNER MERCENERY GROUP TURNS AGAINST RUSSIA
Wagner’s commander, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has announced that his troops will turn back from their advance on Moscow.
Wagner forces seized Russian military bases early on Saturday, June 24, in an attempted coup d’etat motivated by retaliation for an alleged Russian attack on a Wagner military base in Ukraine.
Media around the world went into a frenzy as they learned that Putin had ordered his forces to put down the uprising and that martial law had been declared in Moscow.
But Wagner now claims it’s pulling back.
They planned to destroy PMC Wagner. We attended the March for Justice on June 23. Within a day’s walk, we were nearly 200 kilometers from Moscow. We managed to keep all of our soldiers alive and well this time around. The time for possible bloodshed has arrived. For this reason, and because we recognize our share of the blame for the loss of Russian life on one side, we will be returning to our field camps as planned. Prighozin said that it would be June 24 at night.
Lukashenko, president of Belarus, is said to have spent the day negotiating with Prigozhin and to have claimed credit for the ceasefire.
Prigozhin agreed to Lukashenko’s terms, so his forces have stopped moving and returned to their bases.
It appears that Prigozhin and his men will return to their bases now that the attempted coup has failed.
The Voronezh region, which saw clashes earlier during the coup, has lifted restrictions on the movement of vehicles.
The agreement absolves Prighozin of any criminal responsibility and ensures the safety of PMC Wagner’s fighters.
