The National Population Commission (NPC) spent N200 billion in preparation for the “indefinitely postponed” national census over eight years.
The exercise was scheduled to take place nationwide between 3 and 5 May, but former President Muhammadu Buhari approved an indefinite postponement.
Former minister of information and culture Lai Mohammed had stated that the new administration would determine a date for the event.
Concerns have been raised regarding the commission’s expenditure of the aforementioned amount.
Isiaka Yahaya, director of public affairs for the NPC, said in a statement released on Friday that the commission began spending the amount in 2014, when preparations for the census began.
Yahaya stated that the preparatory activities are already yielding returns that far exceed the N200 billion invested to date.
“It has become necessary to correct the record and put the N200 billion spent by the national population commission in preparation for the 2023 census in proper context,” he said.
“Yes, it is true that N200 billion has been spent on census preparations to date. However, this fund has not been depleted in recent weeks, months, or years, but rather since 2014, when actual preparations for the 2023 census began.
“In fact, a portion of the N200 billion was spent prior to the arrival of the current commission, which was inaugurated twice between 2018 and 2020 and even prior to the beginning of the Buhari administration.
The value of this data alone exceeds trillions of Nigerian naira. This has also resulted in the creation of enumeration area frames for future censuses and surveys.
“Through the census recruitment process, the commission has created a database containing the names, ages, qualifications, addresses, phone numbers, and account numbers of young people who applied for census jobs.”
The director stated that the “skewed media narratives” surrounding the N200 billion spent in preparation for the upcoming census are an attempt to detract from the “great work” the commission has accomplished thus far.
“The scope and quality of the arrangements made will not only be useful for the next census, but will also reduce the cost of future censuses,” he said.
“The commission wishes to reassure Nigerians and development partners of its unwavering commitment and capacity to deliver credible, trustworthy, and acceptable census data.”
