FG. Set To Dissolve Boards of Federal Agencies, Parastatals – This Day/ TNT
THISDAY has learned that the federal government may have decided to dissolve the boards of federal agencies and parastatals in response to pressure from political relevance-seeking supporters.
There are strong indications that the Presidency may have given the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) the go-ahead to dissolve and reconstitute the managements and boards of the agencies and parastatals. However, because some of the positions are tenured, it is uncertain how far it will be implemented.
The approval to dissolve the board of parastatals has already alerted political lobbyists who are preparing to be appointed should the boards of federal parastatals be dissolved.
Yesterday, however, the Director of Information for the OSGF, Willie Bassey, stated that he was unaware of such presidential approval.
Approximately 42 agencies and parastatals directly report to the OSGF and assist the government in carrying out a variety of oversight and administrative functions on a daily basis.
The dissolution of the boards is anticipated to aid President Bola Tinubu in formulating his administration’s agenda.
According to senior civil servants who spoke with THISDAY late last night, it would not be inappropriate for Tinubu to dissolve the boards of federal parastatals inherited from former President Muhammadu Buhari.
They noted that his predecessor engaged in a similar purge in 2015, when he authorized the dissolution of the governing boards of federal parastatals, agencies, and institutions.
Under Buhari’s directive, the chief executive officers of the affected parastatals, agencies, and institutions were instructed to refer all matters requiring the attention of their boards to the president via the Permanent Secretaries of their overseeing ministries.
Similarly, Buhari constituted the boards of the six aviation agencies less than 24 hours before the end of his administration, despite the fact that the agencies had operated without boards for nearly a decade and that the constitution of boards was required by their respective Acts.
The agencies included the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), which was recently established.
However, the ninth Senate was unable to ratify the appointments prior to its dissolution and the subsequent inauguration of a new government on May 29.
