Akpabio emerges 10th Assembly senate President Today
Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of the state of Akwa Ibom, was elected Senate President of the 10th Assembly this morning.
According to The PUNCH, Akpabio, the All Progressives Congress’ preferred candidate, was paired with Jibrin Barau, the senator representing Kano South.
Akpabio and Senator-elect Abdulazeez Yari, the former governor of Zamfara State, squared off in the first round of voting for the election of a new Senate President.
After a brief recess, Sani Tambuwal, the Clerk of the National Assembly, announced that Akpabio had been elected Senate President with 63 votes to his opponent’s 46.
The election began earlier than the announced time of 10 a.m.
Ali Ndume, senator-elect for Borno South, nominated Godswill Akpabio, senator-elect for Akwa Ibom North-East, for the position of Senate President after the Clerk of the National Assembly called for nominations. Akpabio accepted the nomination, while Elisha Abbo, the newly elected senator for Adamawa North, nominated Abdulaziz Yari, the newly elected senator for Zamfara West.
Senators protested that Yari’s candidacy as a first-time candidate was not permitted.
After the legislators cast their ballots in alphabetical order, two representatives from each team arrived to tally the votes.
Senators Adeola Solomon and Ndume appeared on behalf of Senator Akpabio, whereas Senator-elect Jimoh Ibrahim and Senator-elect Abbo represented Senator Yari.
In the end, Akpabio was victorious.
