A bill that will make comprehensive provisions for the prohibition of sexual harassment by educators in tertiary institutions has been passed by the National Assembly. This bill was passed in order to ensure that these provisions will be enforced.

Remember that this bill was approved by the Senate in the year 2020, while the House of Representatives approved their own version at the same time, but with different provisions, as reported by Vanguard.

However, during yesterday’s plenary session, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, stated that the different positions were harmonized by the conference committee that was comprised of members from both chambers. He was presenting the report.

The goal of the pending legislation is to make it a crime for faculty members or other school employees to sexually harass students enrolled in postsecondary education programs.

The Nigerian National Assembly has also passed a law that makes it mandatory for preventative measures against sexual and gender-based violence to be included in the curricula of all levels of secondary education in the country. This law was introduced by the National Assembly.
