On Monday, the Taraba State Police Command accused soldiers of killing two police officers at a military checkpoint near the INEC headquarters in the state’s Jalingo area.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Usman, who confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria, two other policemen were injured during the attack and were being treated in hospital, and that an investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the incident.

He also mentioned that the soldiers fled with the police officers’ rifles after committing the crime around 8.30 a.m.

“The state Commissioner of Police, Yusuf Suleiman, and the Commander 6 Brigade, Brig. Gen. Frank Etim, met, discussed, and agreed to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate the cause of this incident,” Usman said.

“The soldiers shot two police officers before fleeing with their rifles. Some went to the command headquarters with guns and shot sporadically in the air, killing one police officer who was leaving work.

“Another who was just reporting for duty and did not even know what was happening was also shot the moment they identified him as a policeman.

“As we speak, we’ve received reports that our men escorting election results or performing other duties are being harassed at military checkpoints.”
