About 11 women and children have been reported dead in a motor accident along Kano-Zaria Expressway which occurred on Saturday evening.

Daily Trust gathered that the vehicles involved in the accident involved a Toyota C20 bus and a Hilux Van.

An eyewitness explained that “the Hilux Van coming from Kano to Zaria was following the bus from the rear at high speed and wanted to overtake the bus but unfortunately there was an oncoming car which made the driver retreat.”

“While retrieving from overtaking, the Hilux driver smashed the Toyota bus from the rear and made it tumble down the road and engulf in fire.

“Apart from six people that escaped, we counted eleven corpses that were engulfed in the fire, and all of them were female including little children,” he said.

Speaking to Daily Trust, Malam Abdul-Aziz Isyaku, who lost two daughters – Zainab, 16; and Aisha, 8 – said the deceased were returning to Zaria from Kano after visiting their relatives.

“We were expecting them home around 6pm and when we couldn’t see them, we put calls to the relatives in Kano who told us they have boarded a bus to Zaria.

“I started making several calls when I was told of the accident along their way, so I came and despite burning into ashes, I was able to discover their corpses,” he stated.

When contacted through mobile phone for comment, the Spokesman of the Federal Road Safety Corp said he was not in town and so could not speak on the matter.
