Suspected gunmen have killed no fewer than six persons in Awka, Anambra State capital.

The incident took place early hours of Saturday along the popular Zik’s avenue and its environs.

But Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, said the incident was a clash of rival cult groups.

He said the command had deployed troops to douse tension in the capital city.

Sources, on Saturday, said the clash followed the high rate of levies imposed tricycle operators by the Anambra State Government.

The gunmen, it was gathered, were shooting nonstop without any challenge, leading to the death of the six persons

However, another source said they were cult groups involved in battle for supremacy.

While confirming the shooting, the Police spokesperson said patrol had been intensified within the area and the entire Awka. (The Nation)
