Probe of 7,000 abandoned govt assets by the House of Reps

On Thursday, The House of Representatives began its investigation into the over 7,000 abandoned federal government assets at the Federal Capital Territory and its area councils.

Chairman, House ad-hoc committee investigating the abandoned property, Gaza Jonathan Gefwi, at a public hearing in Abuja, said: “The existence of abandoned government property, valued in the hundreds of billions, left to deteriorate should trouble all our consciences.”

General Manager, Federal Housing Authority, Ibrahim Isiaka, said some of the housing projects designated as abandoned were ongoing not abandoned projects.

Earlier, FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello, said relevant agencies of the FCT Administration had been directed to provide all documents on sale of government assets, particularly residential houses, to occupants since 2005.

He said 17 years after the policy, quite a number of those assets were not yet sold and some of them not fully documented.
