Editorial: The unspoken dangers of Gas flaring in Nigeria

Nowadays, destroying the means of livehood of people turns to be our normal routine without for once thinking of its repercussions, turning their house into sacred place and changing their lives into miserable one. They decided to adapt with the dangers associated with Gas flaring and this turns to be ashes, that trembles the heart or can we then rise to release the obituary of those people living in Niger-Delta area due to Gas Flaring?
Natural gas associated with petroleum extraction is burned off in the atmosphere, rather than being removed by alternative means such as subterranean re-injection to storage tanks for sales and this trembles people’s heart through gas flaring.
Gas flaring introduces toxic pollutants such as sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere, which can lead to environmental problems such as acid rain, damaging human health, as well as the generation of greenhouse gases which contribute to global climate change Depletion of Ozone layer never left out. Exposure to Air pollutant causes damage in the respiratory Organ and even Cancer, Carbondioxide (CO2) from Gas flaring represents around 0.6% of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. The flared gas in turn results in the emission of 16.5 million tonnes of Carbondioxide. Then, we are gradually prone to destruction through the release of excessive CO2 into the atmosphere. The World Bank noted that, “Gas flares contribute to climate change through the emission of millions of tons of CO2 to the atmosphere”.
Gas flaring turns to be normal routine, that ambient temperatures are significantly elevated beyond reasonable doubt above the already considerable tropical heat. In addition to the health, safety, and quality of life issues arising from these situations, peer-reviewed research shows that these higher temperatures are associated with reduced crop yields and other environmental factors such as polluting water and killing of farm crops. Green pasture turns yellow or even stops growing entirely. Games are scarce and hunter feel depressed due to noisy condition of Gas flaring. Farmers are bleeding internally due to immeasurable losses. People are lamenting and they turn to commit suicide due to their environment that became unfavourable for them to live and interacts with. World of Agony!!
To crown it all, banning of gas flaring in Nigeria have been ineffective since many years ago. Gas flaring has been illegally banned in Nigeria since 1984—and repeated deadlines for ending the practice have passed unmet ever since. The domestic gas market in Nigeria is underdeveloped, due to dysfunctional pricing and other institutional issues in both electricity and natural gas markets. Oil sales supply a majority of government revenue and serve as only means of revenue creation and a high share of Nigeria’s oil fields have associated gas. The only way to enforce a flaring ban, would be to shut in these fields and cut off the income they provide. Then, flaring will continue until there is a viable outlet for the associated gas.
