Policeman feared killed as Gunmen open fire in Calabar supermarket
A Police officer serving in Cross River State Police Command, Inspector Ngoro Edim, has been killed by gunmen in Calabar. He was shot dead last Thursday night at a supermarket along the Federal Housing Estate Road 5 in Calabar Municipal local council, where he went to shop.
According to an eyewitness, the gunmen were on a mission to kidnap the shop owner but when they saw the late Edim on uniform, they shot him and then escaped with their victim.
Findings showed that he was taken to a hospital in Calabar but he couldn’t survive, as he was confirmed dead at the facility. Confirming the sad incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Irene Ugbo clarified that the late officer was not on his duty post when he was killed.
She said the police were already on the trail of the killers, assuring that they would not go unpunished.
“He was not at his duty post during the incident. He only went to get something at a store near the scene of operation and the criminals saw him as a threat; they decided not to take the risk of allowing him walk.
“But I can assure them that they won’t go unpunished, as we will surely get them, because never again will a police officer be killed, maimed. Within a month we have lost two policemen but we want those who are enemies of peace to know that we are ready for them,” she said.
The deceased police officer, a father of five, hails from Agbaragba village in Ikom local council of the state. (The Guardian: Excluding headline)
