A medical doctor with the University of Benin, Otote Osaikhuomwan, has been shot dead by gunmen suspected to be assassins in Benin City.
The 36 years old doctor with the Department of Ophthalmology, was reportedly shot dead on Monday morning in his house located in GRA, Benin, the Edo State capital.
It gathered that the gunmen who gained access to his apartment shot him on the chest in presence of his pregnant wife, killing him on the spot.
The Edo State Command Police Public Relations, Bello Kongtons, who confirmed the killing, said no suspect has been arrested.
“Yes, the doctor was shot dead. The police is working to unravel the circumstance behind the killing and arrest the perpetrators.”
Meanwhile, members of the Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), UBTH chapter, protested the killing at the hospital.
The protesters blamed the killing of their member on the high level of insecurity in the country.
President of the ARD, Dr Elamah Ikpemimoghena, said insecurity has been one of the reasons responsible for brain drain in the country.
“This is a very unfortunate incident, it came to us as a rude shock and it boils down to the general in the state and in the country at large. This is something that has made a lot of our colleagues reconsider their stance in working in Nigeria” (Daily Trust)
