Convention: Uncertainty over APC governors meeting

The uncertainty over the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) persists.

A meeting of governors elected on the platform of the party slated for Sunday purportedly to decide the convention date will no longer be held, it was learnt on Saturday.

It was gathered in Abuja on Saturday that no formal meeting of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) was called for Sunday.

President Muhammadu Buhari had warned that any further delay in conducting the APC national convention may render the ruling party vulnerable for defeat in 2023.

Plateau State Governor and Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Simon Lalong, after he met with President Buhari on Friday, hinted that APC governors would meet on Sunday.

But a source at the coordinating Secretariat of the PGF in Abuja, where notice of meetings to member governors are issued, said he was unaware of any meeting planned for Sunday. The source said as of the close of work on Friday, no notice of the meeting was sent to any of the APC governors.

“We all read the statement attributed Governor Lalong about a meeting of the forum for Sunday, but no such notice was issued by the Secretariat. It is very doubtful the whole house will be meeting, but one cannot rule out the possibility of two or three governors meeting.

“The controversy the conduct of the national convention is generating is massive. It has become one of the major concerns of party leaders and members. So one cannot rule out moves by some governors, maybe two or three of them meeting, but I am not aware of a general meeting of the forum slated for Sunday,” the source said.

An aide to a governor of the party who also spoke to The Nation on Saturday said his principal was yet to receive any notice of meeting.
