Dutse varsity engages 55 hunters to patrol campus at night
As parts of efforts to ensure adequate security around its campuses, the management of the Federal University, Dutse, (FUD) in Jigawa has engaged the services of local hunters to patrol its campuses at night.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abdulkarim Sabo Mohammed, who confirmed the development, said the decision to approve the hiring of 55 hunters from the Jigawa branch of the Nigerian Hunters Council, was taken in order to assist the security division of the institution in patrolling the campus at night.
The decision is coming days after the university management moved against drivers of tinted glass cars and restricted the movement of male visitors to the female students’ hostels at night.
A statement from the Public Relations Office of the university quoted the vice-chancellor as saying that the action was sequel to the submission of the Chief Security Officer, Col. Abubakar Siddique (rtd), to the management because of the complex security problems facing the country, adding that the hunters in conjunction with FUD security and the police would now conduct daily joint patrol of the campus at night while also complementing the university’s internal security in other areas.
Mohammed said the university engaged the services of the hunters because of their knowledge of the community and their ruggedness, adding that the university security had been given three-week training prior to deployment to the field.
He assured them that those who displayed exceptional skills and commitment among them would be rewarded.
Prof. Mohammed, however, called on staff and students to cooperate with the security division, assuring them that all the arrangements were meant to ensure the security of lives and property in the university.
