Condemnation as fisherman kills dolphin in Rivers
Condemnation has greeted the killing of a dolphin by a fisherman from Oyorokoto, Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State.
A Facebook user, Iwor Amamino, on Saturday posted a picture of the dolphin caught by the fisherman in the area.
Amamino wrote on his Facebook page: “When I told you we have everything, you doubted it. From Oyorokoto (Andoni) to the world”.
But most people condemned the killing of the sea creature saying dolphins “are to be preserved”.
Others said dolphins are friendly and often help stranded fishermen and sailors to safety and should not be killed.
One of the commentators, Maryann Nkechi, wrote: “Why kill these poor dolphins? You all should just stop this. There should be laws guiding these aquatic animals.
“This is what people travel to Dubai just to snap with friendly dolphins, now you see them around here for free and start killing them? That’s not fair.
“They are meant to be preserved for tourist and other aquatic life education. Nigerian fishermen need serious education on these things, you can’t just eat everything in the sea,” she said..
A similar fate befell a whale washed ashore Brass river bank and was butchered by a community in the area.
