Kano converts illegal structures to mega schools
The Kano State Government has announced it will revoke illegally-acquired or not properly documented properties and structures within the metropolitan area for the establishment of mega secondary schools.
Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, who addressed reporters, said the revocation is in view of the prevailing security challenges coupled with the congestion of schools in the outskirt of the city.
“The measure is aimed at decongesting the boarding schools across some 36 local government areas, following persistent abduction of students from boarding schools in neighbouring states.
“While the government was currently reviewing the security situation in the face of the recent offensive against bandits, kidnappers and other criminals in forests adjoining the state, the government would be proactive in adopting measures that secure its schools,” he said.
Garba announced that Filin Bola along Court Road in Tarauni Local Government Area has been confiscated and converted to a mega school, “because it is one of those properties without building permit.”
The Commissioner said when the mega schools begin; each will have among other things, a block of 18 classrooms, laboratory, multipurpose hall, administrative block, sports arena, VIP toilets and state-of-the-art science equipment.
Garba also explained that the government has noted, with concern, how congestion is creating an “incompatible atmosphere for teaching and learning” in the schools as well as the portending dangers students are exposed to in the schools.
Also, yesterday, the Kano State House of Assembly passed a resolution urging the state government to sack the Chairman of the State Internal Revenue Service, Alhaji Abdulrazak Salihi.
This followed the adoption of a motion by the House Leader, Mr Labaran Madari at the committee of the whole in Kano.
The Speaker, Alhaji Ibrahim Chidari, said the lawmakers wanted the Chairman sacked because he lacked competence for the job.
Chidari said Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has dropped sharply in the state in spite of its large economy.
The House, thereafter, set up an Adhoc Committee under the chairmanship of Alhaji Magaji Zarewa (Rogo-APC) to investigate the activities of the service and report in 30 days.
The House also adopted a resolution urging the state government to rehabilitate the Rogo-Gwangwan Road in Rogo Local Government Area due to its deplorable condition.
Again, the Kano State Government announced that the state will harmonise all vertical public health programmes into a single supply chain system, including equipment.
