Corps members on rampage in Lagos; beat thief, block road over stolen phones

There was pandemonium on Thursday in Ikeja, Lagos State, as corps members went on rampage and blocked the road leading to Computer Village over the stealing of two mobile phones belonging to two of them.

Trouble started when two thieves snatched two mobile phones from the corps members who were doing a rally to sensitise market men and women, drivers and others who operate in the area that they would be coming to do a cleanup in the area on Saturday.

The corps members arrested one of the thieves and men of the Lagos State Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) took the suspected thief from the rampaging corps members and detained him in office of the Taxi Union under the bridge in front of Computer Village.

The intervention of the representative of Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Area could not secure the release of the suspects to the policemen who tried to intervene, as the corps members insisted that the phones should be released to them before would release the thief to the police.

The corps members blocked the road under the flyover in Ikeja and prevented vehicular movement for some time. They insisted that they would not lift the barri­cade until the phones are released. The policemen who intervened pleaded to the youths to lift the barricade and release the thief to them but to no avail.

However, they lifted the barricade when the thieves returned of the phones.

However, the owner of the phone discovered that they had stolen money from his account and this led to near-violence situation, as the corps members threatened to beat the thief.

But, respite came the way of the thief following the intervention of men and officers of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad, who took the thief and his accomplice away.

However, one of the arrested thieves told Daily Independent that it was one “Alangba” who stole the phone and not him. (Text excluding headline, courtesy of Daily Independent)
