Court fixes Sept 27 to rule in suit against Ohakim, ex-Imo governor over nude Pictures

A Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Taiwo Taiwo has fixed September 27, to rule on an application by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to take over a case against former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim.
The police are prosecuting Chief Ohakim on criminal charges of threat to the life of an Abuja-based woman, Mrs Chinyere Amuchienwa.
While the court waited for Ohakim to appear for arraignment, at the last adjourned date in March, the AGF told Court that his office has taken over the trial of the former governor from the Inspector General of Police IGP to ensure diligent prosecution.
Specifically, Ohakim is facing trial over an allegation that he threatened to release nude photographs of Mrs Chinyere Amuchienwa.
At a resumed sitting on Thursday, a counsel from the AGF’s Office, Bagudu Sani, told the court that the Police that filed the charge against Ohakim had transferred the case file to the office of the AGF after filing a notice of discontinuance in the matter.
Subsequently, Bagudu said the AGF filed an affidavit of compliance on July 2, 2021.
Reacting, Police lawyer, Rufus Dimka informed the court that the Police filed a complainant/applicant’s counter-affidavit on March 30, 2021.
Adopting an affidavit deposed to by Inspector Joshua Yohana of the Legal Section of the Nigeria Police, Dimka urged the court to grant the notice of discontinuance and strike out the charge.
But Emeka Etiaba (SAN), representing Ohakim objected to the application by the AGF to take over the matter.
He prayed the court to dismiss the application by the AGF, adding that the content of the affidavit of compliance did not in any way affect the consequence of the notice of withdrawal of the charge against the former governor.
He, therefore, urged the court to strike out the charge.
After listening to submissions by parties, Justice Taiwo adjourned till September 27, to rule on the application. (Text, excluding headline, courtesy Daily Independent)
