Yoruba groups unveil plans for security outfit
Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisations yesterday unfolded plans to set up a security outfit to tackle insecurity in the Southwest.
Named Southwest Security Stakeholders Group (SSSG), the new outfit will be led by the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Gani Adams
The decision to set up the security group was taken at the Pan-Yoruba Congress in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
At the meeting were Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, representatives of Afenifere, Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), Yoruba Unity Forum, Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) Ilana Oodua and Voice of Reason.
The initiative was also endorsed by the Agbekoya Vigilante Group of Nigeria (Southwest). Yoruba World Congress and Egbe Omo Yoruba in Diaspora.
Although the relationship between the SSSG and the security outfit, Amotekun, was not stated, the meeting resolved that the SSSG will work together with all groups in Yorubaland to secure the region against criminals.
Governor Makinde underscored the importance of the gathering, saying insecurity is staring everyone in the face.
He said politicians jostling for positions in 2023 should realise that the current situation is of priority.
Makinde said security required efforts of stakeholders in the society.
He said the reason his administration set up a task force on security was because Southwest governors had realised that non-state actors had to be involved in tackling insecurity.
The summit was attended by the YCE Secretary, Dr Kunle Olajide, Chief Yemi Elebuibon, Chief Deji Osibogun, Mrs. Bola Doherty and the representative of the Kabba monarch. (The PUNCH)
