Ghanaians criticise ‘offensive’ textbook

Ghanaians have criticised a draft textbook with “offensive” content about one of the country’s biggest ethnic groups, local media report.

The book titled History of Ghana is said to “disparage” the Ewe community as “inward-looking”, among other descriptions.

a former legislator, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as describing the book as containing “bigoted publications… targeted at denigrating the Ewe ethnic group”.

The tweet raised an uproar on social media over the weekend.

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, an MP, posted on Twitter that he was upset by the content “that has clearly made it an agenda to disparage me and my heritage”.

The publisher of the book, Badu Nkansah Publications, has apologised for the offensive publication, Ghanaweb reported

It said it had submitted a draft copy, based on a new curriculum, to the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), which had raised concerns about certain portions of the book.

It said while the book was still being reviewed, “a limited quantity” of the unpublished draft had found its way onto the market. (BBC)
