‘Prison’ officials batter policewoman to coma

Officials of Ilaro Correctional Center have allegedly battered a woman police officer serving at Agbado Police Station, Yetunde Raimi, to coma at the Center.
SATURDAY INDEPENDENT gathered that some officers, led by the Assistant Controller of the Center, attacked the Inspector who was at Ilaro Correctional Center on the order of a court to remand some suspects.
A reliable source who was involved in the matter but would not want his name in print told SATURDAY INDEPENDENT that the Inspector was at the Correctional Center with a duly signed and stamped detain warrant.
The officials of the Center were quoted to have told the Inspector that the suspects were not healthy and would not be admitted into the Center, a position the Inspector rejected before the prison officials she descended on her.
She was said to have been beaten to a coma from where she was rushed to Grace Hospital in Agbado, where she received treatment almost one week before she was discharged.
According to another reliable source who has information about the issue, the matter started when a community in Agbado arrested two suspects for burglary and stealing and the community descended on them heavily before they were handed over to the police.
When he saw their condition, SATURDAY INDEPENDENT gathered, the DPO Agbado took the two of them to the hospital and treated them using his personal money in order for them to be fit for trial.
When they were fit, the source said, the DPO charged them to court and the magistrate gave an order that they be remanded in prison custody.
The Inspector, who was the IPO, took them to Ilaro Correctional Center where they were rejected on the basis of their health.
The Inspector was said to have insisted that she was carrying out an order of the court but was ordered out by the Assistant Controller of the Center, before she was descended upon after she insisted on carrying out the order.
“The Woman Inspector was issued dully stamped and signed detained warrant from Ifo Magistrate Court 5 headed by Magistrate O.M Awosanya to remand the defendants.
“On getting to the Prison around 4:00pm, the suspects were rejected by the Prison Officers led by Oshin Bamidele on the ground that there were injuries on the suspects.
“As the Police Inspector was trying to explain the situation to the prison officers, one senior officer and his junior officers seriously assaulted the police woman to the extent she was rushed to the hospital,” the source revealed.
When contacted, the Ogun Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident adding that the matter was being resolved by the top echelon of the two agencies.
He said, “It is true that it happened, the CP is sad that such incident happened but the top echelon of the two organisations are working to resolve the matter and to make sure that such ugly incident do not happen again.” (Saturday Independent)
