2023: Power brokers scheme to have INEC under control
There is current tussle among power brokers in Nigeria on who controls the soul of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as plot thickens at the weekend on how to stop the return of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as its chairman for a second term.
The power brokers are desperately scheming to have the agency under their firm control ahead of the 2023 general elections, a plot which may determine the fate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Also, the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has raised the alarm over alleged plots by a serving minister to procure an ex parte order to stop the senate from screening of Professor Yakubu as INEC chairman.
Consequently, IPAC has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and Chief Justice of the Federal High Court, saying the move is to destabilise the electoral process and embarrass the President.
Those widely believed to be involved in the current struggle to take over INEC are the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, and another group said to be loyal to the APC National Leader and a former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu.
