The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reiterated its call for the use of speed limiting device by vehicles, saying that it is a statutory requirement for all vehicles plying Nigerian roads.

Rivers Sector Commander of FRSC, Corps Commandant Salisu Galadunci, made this known on Saturday in Port Harcourt during a meeting with state chapter of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union of NUPENG.

He charged articulated vehicles drivers involved in lifting of petroleum products to install speed limiting device on their vehicles.

According to him, the device would help check road accidents which in most cases had led to product spillages, fire outbreaks and loss of lives.

“Since the overall cost on lifting petroleum product is very high, it is therefore, pertinent to ensure that the product as well as the drivers are safely delivered.

“I urge the Union leaders to take responsibility for actions of their drivers and support the course of the Corps so as to prevent the losses involved in tanker explosions and product spillages,” he said.

The FRSC boss also said that fatigue was one of the causes of road traffic crashes and admonished drivers to observe adequate rest before embarking on any journey.

Galadunci discouraged drivers from the use of stimulants, adding that such indulgence would only postpones an accident rather than preventing it.

Responding, National Assistant Secretary of NUPEND/PTD Mr Oluchi Chinagorom, thanked the Sector Commander for the safety enlightenment.

He assured him of the union’s readiness to partner the Corps towards ensuring a safer motoring environment in the state.

“I acknowledge the need for speed control on the part of petroleum tanker drivers. If we imbibe this culture, we will indeed help save lives and ensure continuity in our businesses,” he said. (NAN)
