The Abia State Police Command has launched a man hunt for nine suspects who escaped from its custody on Saturday night, even as it has announced on Sunday that it has rearrested 20 of the 29 escapees.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Geoffrey Ogbonna, told the Daily Independent in a telephone interview in Umuahia on Sunday that the 29 suspects who escaped were amongst those remanded in the police custody by various courts in Umuahia after their cases were adjourned till future dates.
According to him, the courts did so following the rejection of new inmates by the Nigeria Correctional Services (Prisons) in Umuahia following the outbreak of the Coronavirus, pointing out that rather than sending those whose cases are yet to be determined to the prisons, the courts now remand in police custody.
He revealed that the incident occurred at about 8pm Saturday when the suspects requested for water from the cell guard, adding that no soon did the innocent cell guard opened the door to hand the water over to them than they forced their way out and fled in different directions.
The police image maker opined that following the development, the police sent out its dragnet to all nooks and crannies of the state and that as a result of the police swift action, 20 of the suspects were rearrested.
He therefore urged the public to look out for anybody that may pretend to be mentally unstable in order to deceive the people into thinking that he is not well, using that ploy to escape arrest.
Such a person, he disclosed, could be one the fleeing suspects, even as he requested members of the public to report him to the nearest police station for interrogation and subsequent arrest. (Independent)
