Adamawa imposes curfew on warring communities
The Adamawa State Government has imposed dusk to dawn curfew on the entire Guyuk Local Government Area, following renewed violence in the area.
The curfew also covers Lafiya town in Lamurde Local Government area, where violence had erupted in some communities.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri in a statement issued on Thursday evening, expressed his sadness over the breach of peace in the area.
He approved the imposition of an immediate dusk to dawn curfew, which took effect from 6:00pm on Thursday to 6:00am on Friday.
“I’m worried that the warring communities have refused to sheath their swords, despite government’s peace building initiative,” Governor Fintiri said.
He therefore warned those sponsoring the violence to have a rethink and allow peace to reign in the area, while urging residents to abide by the directives until further notice, to restore normalcy to the area.
The Adamawa State Governor said he viewed the disturbances unacceptable and advised the neighbours, who had been living together for years, to learn to tolerate each other’s differences for the benefit of all.
He reiterated the directive that security agencies would be going around to enforce the curfew, urging residents of affected areas to shun rumour mongering and provide relevant information to the security agencies.
Governor Fintiri equally warned that anyone caught violating the curfew would be dealt with accordingly.
He, however, guaranteed that lives and property of the people would be protected, further urging residents to exercise restraint and remain calm, because the government was doing everything possible to track down the perpetrators and restore peace to the affected communities. (VON)
