Late Justice Adolphus Karibi Whyte

Adolphus Karibi-Whyte, a former judge of the supreme court, has died at the age of 88.

Dagogo Karibi-Whyte, son of the late justice, confirmed that his father died on Friday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital.

A native of Abonnema, Rivers, Karibi-Whyte was born on January 29, 1932.

He attended Kalabari National College Buguma, Rivers, from 1946 to 1950 and worked as a clerk of a court from 1951 to 1957.

He obtained an LL.B. from the University of Hull, England, in 1960 and was called to the bar in the Middle Temple a year afterwards.

In September 1962, he obtained an LL.M. from the University of London and in 1970, he obtained a Ph.D from the University of Lagos.

The late justice was appointed judge of the federal revenue court in 1976.

He was elevated to the court of appeal in 1980 and later promoted to the supreme court of Nigeria in 1984.

Some of his most celebrated judgments include: Government of Gongola State v Tukur (1989), Attorney General of the Federation v Attorney General of Abia State, Grace Jack v University of Agriculture, Makurdi (2004) and Savannah Bank of Nigeria Limited v Pan Atlantic Shipping & Transport Agencies Limited (1987)

The late judge had seven children.
