Abia Youths ‘conquer’ Policemen set detained residents free

Youths from Ebem Ohafia, in Abia State, at the weekend in¬vaded the police barrack at the community and chased away all officers on duty, even as they released all detainees at the po¬lice cell.

Speaking on phone, a mo¬torcyclist from the town, one Kalu Okwara, said the action was taken because most of the detainees were youths from the community who were illegally detained.

“We took the action because some of the boys there are our brothers who were illegally de¬tained because they went out to buy something or were going to farm.

“Tell me, can’t we fend for ourselves since government did not provide anything for us since the lockdown,” he asked.

It will be recalled that there was mayhem last Saturday after personnel of the Ohafia Police Station shot and killed a youth identified as Innocent Friday.

It has been revealed that the deceased was a trader, who came out to display his wares as his master was still at home.

The suspected policeman confronted him and threw away his wares which did not go down well with him.

On challenging the cop, he was reportedly slapped and according to a source from the community, he retaliated leading to the officer gunning him down.  (Daily Independent)
