A musician in northern Nigeria has gone into hiding after a song he composed caused offence among a group of Sunni Muslims.

A small group of protesters gathered outside the headquarters of the Islamic police, known as the Hisbah, in the northern city of Kano, demanding action against Yahaya Sharif-Aminu.

The song he released is viewed as completely acceptable by some fellow followers of the Tijaniya Muslim brotherhood.

But Sunni Muslims say it is blasphemous, as it praises an imam to the extent it elevates him above the Prophet Muhammad.

Over the weekend, the musician’s home was burnt down.

The Islamic police have appealed for people not to take the law in to their own hands.

They say they are working with the regular Nigerian police to find the musician. (BBC)
