Nigerian Women On The Use of Bleaching Creams

3

The Nigerian market is awash with all kinds of products which promise
a lot but do nothing and many times do much more harm than good.
Since the world began an organic revolution and  information began
tilting towards everything organic, Nigerians have joined the band
wagon without fully understanding or research what exactly the term
means.

Organic is actually anything without chemicals or artificial
components, products derived from nature and delivered in their
natural state mixed with or without other natural products.
One of such products is bleaching creams. Nigerian women generally
believe that a lighter skin tone makes them more beautiful and
appealing so the skin care market has bloomed and is bustling with all
sorts of products from real to very fake. Such successful names as
HushP, Bismid, have made the business owners very successful. Other
such names as Toyin Aimaku, Dencia Bobrisky are clearing out selling
bleaching creams and making huge profit.
There is the White Success from Togo which most women in the low
income patronize.

However, many of these creams are doing a lot of damage to users. With
social media marketing, it has become easy for anyone to sell anything
on the internet without any quality control.
One of such products is Caldor Organic cream.
Women have been crying out and raising alarms over the reaction they
had to Caldor.
A lady who reached out showing the world her burnt skin, blackened
hands and charcoal burnt legs on social media, said the cream which
she bought at a very expensive price in a Lagos shop did her in.

“My hands and feet are the worst. That cream which I thought was
organic burnt all of my face, my hands and my legs. I just want to go
back to my original colour. I do not know what devil pushed me into
this” she lamented.
A skin care expert spoken to by this reporter advised women to be very
careful about the claims of these producers some who even print fake
NAFDAC numbers on their products. We see many of these cases everyday,
to reverse the effects is very difficult as we sometimes have to
repair the damage with laser technology”
Legal experts say users may sue but the cost of litigation is so high
and it would take a lot of forensic investigation to prove the fact.

It is simply better to stay away from such creams and use creams made
by people who have a visible manufacturing outfits and address”.
Until NAFDAC takes the cosmetic industry more seriously, many Nigerian
women will continue to fall prey to quacks.
