5 Inmates Electrocuted in Ikoyi Prisons
Some inmates at Ikoyi Prison, now known as Ikoyi Custodial Centre, were electrocuted to death inside the prison yard.
Our reporter gathered that the sad incident took place on Monday morning, five inmates lost their lives, while 10 sustained injuries in the accident.
The minister of interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has ordered a probe into the cause of the incident.
Aregbesola has visited the scene along with Nigeria’s head of Prison services
“The attention of the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has been drawn to an electrocution incident at the Ikoyi Medium Security Prison in Lagos,” the statement read.
“The Minister has directed a quick investigation into the root cause and the ministry will in the next few hours share a comprehensive update on the incidence.
“While we commiserate with the victims of the incidence, the minister has ordered immediate medical attention for those affected.”
The prison facility which is meant for 800 inmates accommodates over 2000 persons.
